- Avogadro number(N) is defined as the number
of Carbon-12 atoms in 12g of C-12.
- Avogadro number of particles(N) is considered
as 1 mole of particles. Thus Avogadro number of methane molecules(N)
will be one mole of methane. 16g of methane (molecular weight
of methane is 16)will contain N molecules of methane, they will
occupy 22.4 liters under standard conditions.
- Thus one mole of any gas under standard conditons
will occupy 22.4 liters. This is called "gram molecular
volume".
- The precise number is unknown, since it is not
possible to physically count the number of atoms.
- It is normally considered as 6.023 x1023
- More accurately 6.0221415 x 1023 (with
an uncertainty of 0.000 0010 x 1023)
- There are many ways available for estimation
of this number, the most accurate for the present being through
X-ray studies of crystals.
- A number of web sites are available which give
information about these methods and other fascinating details.
