1. Observed in pyrolysis of esters (xanthate esters and amine oxides)
2. Concerted unimolecular reaction involving a six membered cyclic transition state.
3. Esters with β – hydrogen on the alkoxy group undergo pyrolytic elimination.
4. Can be run as gas phase reactions.
5. Syn stereochemistry of the product is observed.
